Busy times in Year One!

This week we learnt all about the Giant Panda! We used information books and the internet to find out lots of facts about them. We thought this website was really good WWF - Giant Panda and there were some good news clips about Pandas on the newsround website too. We talked about why Panda's are endangered and we developed our computing skills to make posters about them.

In Literacy we have been busy story making using the story 'The Tiger Who Came to Tea'. Everyone worked hard to come up with their own version of the story by changing the key features of the original story. After lots of practise retelling the new stories, and sharing ideas with friends we were able to start writing! The new stories are fantastic and the children all worked so hard to write them up in best!

All Creatures Great and Small

We have had lots of fun this week starting our new topic 'All Creatures Great and Small'. We started our topic off by thinking about just how amazing animals really are and we used the internet to research some rather strange animals just to prove it! This week we have learnt two new words; 'endangered' and 'extinct'. We went up to the library to find books about endangered animals and we used these, and the internet, to create lists of animals that are endangered. We looked closely at tigers and found a great book which has taught us lots of interesting facts! We really liked the pictures in the book too so we created some of our own... don't they look great!

We added some facts and one of the pictures to our World Map display to remind us where tigers can be found. We are looking forward to adding to this map from our learning across all of our topics in Year One! The thunderstorm today caused lots of excitement in Year One today so we spent some time finding out about them and looking at amazing pictures of lightning at night time! We learnt there are around 1,800 thunderstorms across the world in one day!

Rights and Responsibilities

Last week we thought about our Rights and Responsibilities. We decided our three most important rights were to be safe, to be happy and to learn. We then discussed our responsibilities to respect these rights for ourselves and for others. We have displayed our Rights and Responsibilities in the classroom, they look great!

What a lovely first week!

We have had a lovely few days in Year One! It has been great to see so many smiling faces, Mrs Gibson and I have had a wonderful time getting to know you all! We have had a very busy three days exploring our new classroom and finding where everything lives! The classroom was remarkably tidy at the end of each day too - thank you!

To start the year off we have been thinking about our base name, Europe Base. We looked in the Atlas and found out there are so many different countries in Europe! We enjoyed looking at the flags for the different countries and had a go at creating our own. We also researched 5 European Artists; Morris, Kandinsky, Picasso, Van Gogh and Monet. We found out where each Artist came from and in teams we then had a go at recreating some of their work...

Kandinsky

Van Gogh

Monet

Morris

Picasso

I'm sure you will agree that Year One have worked very hard this week...
