The United Kingdom... "Where's that? I've never been there!"

We have all been working really hard this week on our topic 'Home and Away'. When we started learning about the United Kingdom, some people were really excited because they had never been there! Once we realised we have all there because we live in England we were able to think about some of the things we already knew about too, and share our knowledge with our friends.

We worked together and looked at fact sheets, atlases and information books about the four different countries and we then set about making our own group information posters. Have a look at some the facts we found out about here...

In English, we have really enjoyed reading stories from other cultures. We read Bringing the Rain to Kapiti Plain and worked in small groups to retell the story. This week we have learnt two new words; nouns and adjectives. We have been searching for these words in our books and trying to remember some good ones that we could use in our own writing! When you're reading at home this weekend you could have a look for some more adjectives and maybe even start your own 'wow word' book!

We added our story retellings to our world map display and linked it to Kenya, the country where it was written. We also read Handa's Hen which was also written in Kenya! We loved this story too!

I have really enjoyed our first week back at school, thank you to everyone for coming back to school all ready to learn again. See you next week!

Bringing the Rain to the Kapiti Plain

In English this week we will be looking at the story 'Bringing the Rain to the Kapiti Plain'. I have found an online version of the story so you can have a read of it at home too.

Home and Away

I hope you have all had a lovely half term break and are all looking forward to coming back to school in the morning!

We had a little think at the end of last term about what we wanted to learn about next and together we decided we wanted to learn more about the world! We have enjoyed using, and adding to, our world map display in the classroom and we want to add more to it! So, this half term we will be exploring our topic 'Home and Away'.

Before we start thinking about other places around the world, this week we will be thinking about the United Kingdom and the four countries that are part of it. Have you visited Scotland, Wales or Northern Ireland? If you have and you have some photos/postcards/leaflets from your visit bring them in and we can add them to our map (I can photocopy them if you want them back!)

As part of our Play and Learning this week you can help Barnaby Bear with his weather report of the United Kingdom. Click on the link below...

A week of Rubbish!

It's Enterprise week at Blandford St Mary at we have had a very busy time in Year One! The theme for the week 'Eco' so we have made lots of products made from recyclable materials to sell at the Enterprise Market on Friday afternoon. In English we have been learning all about rubbish! We have found out about how paper is recycled and what different materials turn into when they are recycled. We found out that sometimes plastic bottles turn into carpets or the stuffing inside our pillows! We also learnt what happens when we don't recycle so we have been really careful this week to make sure we have recycled everything we can because we weren't too happy about the thought of putting rubbish in big holes in the ground!

These are our amazing Olaf toys made from old socks, the stuffing of old pillows and scrap pieces of felt! A big thank you to Mrs Kempster who came in to help us make them!

We have made these lovely, colourful glitter bottles out of old plastic bottles which look fantastic when you shake them up!

We had fun exploring colour mixing to create these great boxes out of old laptop battery packaging. We though you could keep pencils, crayons, jewellery or cars in there! The choice is yours!

We have also made these fun bookmarks out of scrap paper, card and the ribbons that you find inside some tops!

We can't wait for the Enterprise Market on Friday!
