Fire Safety

Yesterday we had a visit from a Fire Safety Officer! We talked to us about fires and how we can keep ourselves safe. We asked us all to go home and check our smoke detectors or smoke alarms are working! Lots of people have come into school this morning having checked their alarms last night, well done!
He told us that firemen in Blandford have only 5 minutes to get ready for an emergency call! In that time they have to get to the fire station and get changed and jump on the fire engine! We all had a go at getting dressed into a uniform as quickly as we could. The quickest team got dressed in 50 seconds! Here are some pictures of us dressed up...

We learnt some facts about fire engines too...

  • They cost £350,000 pounds each!
  • There are 3 types of fire engine.
  • Each fire engine can hold 1808 litres of water, which it can empty in less than one minute!
  • The fire man in charge wears a white helmet.
  • The driver is in charge of changing the power from the engine to the water pump!
  • Some of the hoses are 120m long!
  • The longest ladder is 14.5m long!
In Maths today we used lots of different shapes to make our own fire engines.
